BioStar Ventures is a venture capital partnership created by some of the most successful and innovative physician thought leaders coupled with decades of venture capital experience and health care executives. The group has unique proprietary deal-flow, knowledge of new devices and protocols, insight and knowledge into the FDA, clinical and bench research and finally the acquisition needs and in house development of the major strategic acquirers. BioStar Ventures’ capital efficient model is a unique marriage of world renowned clinicians with experienced venture capitalists. This allows BioStar Ventures to capture unique deal flow and leverage decades of scientific knowledge, clinical expertise, and patient care delivery experience in early stage medical devices to BioStar’s investors and limited partners.
BioStar Ventures invests in companies where we can leverage the clinical expertise of the BioStar Ventures Team. Our key focus is in cardiovascular, orthopedic, and neuroscience areas which accounts for approximately two thirds of all medical device areas. Often a BioStar Ventures medical venture partner or advisor will serve on the SAB of our portfolio companies as we believe our clinical expertise can only expedite a company’s success in device development and knowledge regarding acquisition targets and strategy.
If appropriate, BioStar Ventures does not hesitate to serve as an investor but follow-on invests as well. Our initial investment in a company ranges from $250K - $3 million, depending upon the technology and stage of a company’s development. We intend to support our portfolio companies in their follow-on financing rounds through time of exit. Accordingly, BioStar Ventures invests between $2 - $6 million over the life of an investment. Strategic and institutional investors to date have included the DOW Foundation, Boston Scientific, Synthes and Morgan Stanley’s Front-Point Funds.

Ms. Masi has over 20 years of experience in the venture capital industry where she focused most recently on life science investing. Ms. Masi currently serves on the boards of SynergEyes, Hotspur Technologies, and CardiacMD. Prior to joining BioStar Ventures, Ms. Masi was a Partner with Windward Ventures, a firm focused on southern California early stage companies, where Ms. Masi was responsible for the firm’s life science investing strategy. Ms. Masi was an advisor to Ventures Medical, a seed stage fund affiliated with the Texas Medical Center. In 1990 Ms. Masi opened the Boston office for Technology Funding, a $250 million venture capital fund based in San Mateo, California. Ms. Masi began her career as an investment banker in the health care finance group of Merrill Lynch. In addition to holding a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from The Wharton School of Business, Ms. Masi is also a member of the Board of Councilors for the USC Graduate School of Social Work.
