Historically, Arizona-based entrepreneurs seeking capital would pitch their company to individuals or small groups of investors one-at-a-time. Although the market has functioned this way for years, this process is inefficient for both parties. Entrepreneurs spend valuable time raising capital in small blocks instead of focusing on their business. Investors receive numerous unqualified requests for funding, often lack the industry knowledge to evaluate certain companies, and miss out on excellent companies that are funded outside their network of contacts.
Arizona is also unique because many of its investors are new to the area. These individuals have not yet established links to the local angel community in Arizona (e.g. investors originally from Chicago know the former Chicago crowd, but not the former Minneapolis crowd, etc.).
The Arizona Angels Investor Network was formed in 1999 with the goal to help organize and facilitate the process by which private companies raise capital from individual investors in Arizona. The organization has grown to over 100 individual and institutional (VC funds, incubators and other angel groups) investor members. To date, members have invested over $3.5M in six companies with over $16M in additional capital raised by these companies from co-investors in the same or subsequent rounds.

Dee Harris is President of the Arizona Angels Venture Group, LLC and a member of the Angel Capital Association, the international organization of angel group leaders. He was previously Co-founder and Co-Managing Partner of Alare Capital Partners, LLC, a Scottsdale, Arizona-based middle market investment banking firm. He also served as Senior Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of Carmichael & Company LLC, a New York-based technology-oriented investment banking firm that relocated to Phoenix, and Managing Director of Hill Thompson Capital Markets, a New York investment banking firm specializing in food and beverage companies.
Dee is on the executive and screening committees of Invest Southwest, Arizona’s annual venture capital conference, and served in the same capacities for the former Investing in Innovation Conference, a project of the Arizona Software and Internet Association (now the Arizona Technology Council.) He also served for several years as a judge for the event now known as the Governor’s Celebration of Entrepreneurship. Dee is a member of the board of the Enterprise Network, a former President of the Arizona Business Leadership Association, and the immediate past Chair of the Arizona BioIndustry Association.
Earlier in his career, Dee was a securities lawyer and a securities regulator, including service as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Outlook Capital Management, Inc., a national real estate investment company, Director of Securities of the Arizona Corporation Commission, and President of the North American Securities Administrators Association, the organization of state and provincial securities regulators in the United States and Canada. He has testified before Congress on six occasions regarding pending federal securities legislation and has taught Securities Regulation at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University and the Thomas M. Cooley Law School Law in Michigan.
