It was in March of 2000 that the Hub Angels Investment Group was formed. This angel group was founded by Charles Cameron and David Verrill. Mr. Cameron, the Managing Director, and Mr. Verrill comprise the current Management Team that heads the Hub Angels.
The Hub Angels is a group of individuals in different fields of expertise, but who share a common interest in early stage company investment. The group centers on companies located in the greater Boston area, locally known as the "Hub," thus the name Hub Angels. As of date, they have more than 50 member investors in the Hub Fund I and Hub Fund II. These dedicated members have also devoted themselves in the development of the group's very own investment method and structure that allows each member to engage in co-investments. These co-investments are being made with other angel investment groups.
The group primarily invests on early stage companies that are technology-inclined, have a strong management team, have a viable product that has a high market potential, have a technology that is one of its kind, have a pre-money valuation of $10 million or less, and are located in the greater Boston or New England states area. The amount of investment per company ranges from $250,000 to $1 million. The company that can satisfy the Hub Angels' requirements can submit their applications and executive summaries according to a format provided in the angel group's website. After these applications have been reviewed, three companies will be picked to present their business proposals during the group's regular meeting held every two months. This 15-minute presentation will be followed by a panel discussion. After which, the members will vote for a certain company that can move forward to the due diligence process. In a period within 60 to 90 days, the investment decision shall arise. After the final agreement and investment have been made, a member of the group will then sit as one of the Board of Directors in the company for monitoring and mentoring. This is where the expertise of the member investors is utilized to work for the advancement of the company's progress and the success of their investment as well.
A total of 12 company investments have already been made by the Hub Angels. These are companies in the industries of financial services, entertainment, retail, biotechnology, health care, water treatment, food technology, and digital audio. These companies include Circle Lending, Exit 41, Experion Systems, LifeHarbor/Vestmark, RedTail Solutions, Seahorse Bioscience in Hub Fund I and Jam Technologies, Inc. in Hub Fund II.
The Hub Angels also has existing co-investments with other angel investment groups such as GE Capital, Commonwealth Capital, Rock Maple, Brook, Thomas Weisel, Fidelity, Boston Community Ventures, Bessemer, Blue Chip, Blue Sky, and FlagShip.
