Tristate Ventures is a New York-based angel investment group founded in 1999 by Mr. Stephen Nagler. Considered to be the leading angel investment group in New York today, the organization invested over $3 million on newly emerging companies in 2003 alone. Over the years, the group has assisted various companies from a wide range of industries such as biotechnology, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, medical devices, and information technology as a member of the leading organization of angel investors in North America, the Angel Capital Association.
The members of the Tristate Ventures come not just from New York but also from Pennsylvania. There are currently about sixty-four member investors. Members come from different fields of expertise from the most successful industries as corporate executives, entrepreneurs, and private investors. Most of these angel investors are retirees who have attained great wealth and honors from their endeavors. Thus, they look for lucrative investment opportunities with early-stage companies with great potentials for growth.
Membership to Tristate Ventures is open to accredited investors in accordance to the qualifications imposed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States. Qualifications for accredited investors are generally based on a person's net worth or income. Accredited investors should have an individual or joint net worth of $1 million, an individual annual income of at least $200,000, or a joint annual income of at least $300,000 or more. Membership is not confined to the state of New York but is open to any qualified accredited investor from all over the country. An annual membership of $200 is required from each qualified investor.
Tristate Venture evaluates at least two companies during its monthly meetings. It commits about $11 million worth of funding in four to five investment deals. The investment group usually invests on early-stage companies that are engaged in the life sciences or highly technological companies. Applications for funding can be forwarded to Tristate Ventures for evaluation. Interested parties should submit an application and an executive summary. Companies that are initially qualified should be ready with a business presentation for the group's final evaluation. Only after the necessary evaluation and due diligence process shall an investment be finalized.
