The Hawaii Angels was originally established as the UH Angels by Robert Robinson, PhD. in February of 2002 at Honolulu, Hawaii. The investment group was re-organized and named as the Hawaii Angels in September of 2006. It was in the same year when chapters in Big Island and Maui were established. Over the years, Hawaii Angels have accumulated $22 million worth of investments on start-up companies in Hawaii under Robinson, who, up to this day, remains to be the Chairman of the Board.
To be a member of the Hawaii Angels, one should be an accredited investor in accordance with the requirements of the Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States. Interested parties must also be willing to commit $50,000 to $100,000 worth of investments in the next three years and pay an annual membership fee of $1,000. Interested individuals who meet the qualifications should contact Hawaii Angels through electronic mail to receive an invitation to one of the meetings of the group. After the initial meeting, prospective members should accomplish an application form and submit it directly to the Hawaii Angels via postal mail and pay the annual membership fee. The Hawaii Angels looks for investment opportunities on companies that are in the start-up stage. Applying companies should have a competitive management team, an exclusively owned product or technology, and high marketability. Most of the companies that the group evaluates are considered as "Qualified High Technology Businesses." It means that the nature of business should be in astronomy, biotechnology, computer software design and development, non-fossil fuel energy technology, ocean sciences, sensor and optic technologies, or performing arts. Companies that meet the criteria and are in need of funding may submit an application and supporting documents through an online registration system on the Hawaii Angels' website. Only two companies will be qualified for a business presentation each month. Companies that will qualify can acquire business presentation guidelines from the investment group's website.
