Located in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey and founded in November 2002, Jumpstart New Jersey Angel Network focuses on start-up companies with rapid growth potential and wide market opportunities within the Mid-Atlantic region. The New Jersey Technology Council (NJTC) and New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) actively supported the creation of the group to help early-stage entrepreneurs in developing business ideas by seed capital investment and professional guidance. Jumpstart develops strong networks with venture capitalist firms and angel investment groups to gain resources in helping technology-based start-ups. The group also takes into consideration businesses that apply recent technology to innovate traditional markets.
Unlike other capital fund groups, Jumpstart does not go into pool investment -- members personally provide their money in a company that suits their investment criteria. This way, it fosters an efficient working relationship between the investor and the entrepreneur which is essential in successful businesses.
Interested start-ups are requested to submit their executive summaries online. Once the group agrees with the potential of the business, an invitation to present in one of Jumpstart's monthly meetings is sent to the entrepreneur. However, they are reminded that a formal presentation does not necessarily lock an investment. Furthermore, entrepreneurs with referrals from Jumpstart members are given priority and better chances of investment success.
Seed investment ranges from $200,000 up to $1M for start-ups that passed the rigorous selection process and presentation. As Jumpstart managed to establish a wide network of influential investment groups, companies in need of funds between $1M and $2M are also supported by deal agreements. In case a start-up needs more than $2M worth of financing, the group advises the entrepreneur to seek investment from venture capitalists.
"Meet the Angels" is one of Jumpstart's regular events where entrepreneurs are given opportunities to meet Jumpstart members and learn how to attract bigger investments from venture capitalists and angel groups. Jumpstart members are senior executives, seasoned entrepreneurs, and private investors with diverse backgrounds in different industries. They are keen to share their skills and knowledge with start-up entrepreneurs. "Meet the Angels" is invitational; interested parties are asked to upload their one-page executive summary online before getting considered.
In just two years, Jumpstart had already funded almost $8.5M worth of investment in 14 companies. Jumpstart members guide start-up companies in the difficult phase of service development, market study, profit-generating strategies, and initial funding needs. While some investors are providing advice in decision-making and deal sourcing, members often take a seat in the start-up's Board of Directors to manage operations and aid in developing strategies to increase product sales and revenues. Jumpstart's list of successful portfolio companies include Knowtions, Andrew Technologies, Gala Power, Princeton Global, Provex, Sword Diagnostics, and Sun Farm Network.
