Founded in 2005, the Toronto Network of Angels is a group of senior executives, business magnates, and local venture capital investors whose primary objective is to support Ontario-based early stage companies by providing seed capital investment. The organization focuses on technological investments specifically in advancement of opportunities in industrial and life science. The Toronto Industrial Angels looks for start-up companies with huge market potential in construction technologies, advanced manufacturing, traditional industry, advanced materials, and nanotechnology. On the other hand, the Toronto Life Science Angels aims to support emerging entrepreneurs whose companies can provide a wide annual gross margin of revenues in industries that include therapeutics, pharmaceuticals, medical technologies, health care, medical devices, diagnostics, and biotechnology. The operational model in both investment industries works this way: after providing start-up companies the initial funding they need to accomplish set of goals and milestones within a period of time, the members of the group offer expert advice and individual counseling of each company's potential and business growth. Then, the group provides substantial strategies on how the companies can increase market opportunities and optimum service. Start-ups are expected to sustain stability and to reach further rounds of financing from venture capitalists or private investors. As the name of the group suggests, Toronto Network of Angels also promotes syndication to establish connection with other angel investment groups, venture capitalist firms, and related organizations. Start-up companies who are seeking for seed capital are requested to send comprehensive executive summaries either online or submitting to the group's head office. Shortlisted entrepreneurs shall be notified at least three weeks before the presentation to members who are accredited investors by the Ontario Securities Commission. Initial investment ranges from $100,000 to $2M for start-ups who passed the screening process. In addition, entrepreneurs should likewise be reminded not to submit proprietary or confidential information because the group does not sign to any non-disclosure agreements (NDAs). Aside from early stage companies, the group also considers a follow-up funding, may it be a second-round or third-round investment, of life science business within the North American region. As of the moment, the companies included in the group's portfolio are Pathogen Detection Systems, a private company devoted in research of microbiological tests, and Scisense, which focuses on medical devices and technology products to support the health service industry. The Toronto Network of Angels is a member of Angel Capital Association (ACA), North America's foremost league of angel investment groups. Guidelines are set forth with regard to aspiring applicants who wish to be a member of the group. Membership is open to private investors, entrepreneurs, and company executives within Canada and the United States as long as they meet the necessary financial requirements as stipulated in the group's website.
