As Connecticut's premier angel group, the Angel Investor Forum (AIF) strives to perpetuate the development of early-stage companies in the Northeast. In 2004, the group was founded due to increasing demands from small-scale and emerging enterprises that do not usually attract investments from venture capitalists. AIF provides opportunities to entrepreneurs through seed capital and management guidance to help them in building successful and influential companies. As every angel fund works mutually, AIF investors gain significant financial returns on their investments within a specific period of time.
AIF takes into consideration start-up companies that focuses on software products, financial services, medical devices, and consumer services. The group is comprised of accredited investors, first-rate entrepreneurs, former CEOs, and business leaders that works with venture capitalist firms, organizations, industry-based angel groups, and institutions to support its portfolio companies in subsequent funding and deal sourcing. These resources help facilitate the deal flow and investment process which makes the financing more stable and efficient.
AIF seeks investment opportunities with huge market potential and growth sustainability. In addition, the business should be managed by an exceptional team of success-driven entrepreneurs with related experience in their focus industry. Financial projections must be supported by well-articulated marketing strategies to increase sales and profits. Candidates should also display a unique advantage against their competitors such as intellectual property, technology, and patent. Also, an exit strategy within a three to five-year period is also required. Aside from getting the opportunity to be funded by AIF investors, entrepreneurs should also devise a plan on how to attract follow-on investments from venture capitalists to increase company valuation.
Initially, interested entrepreneurs are requested to send a one-page executive summary of their proposal. The specific content and template is available on the AIF website. If the Screening Committee sees a potential, a complete summary will then be asked. Consequently, necessary business documents are submitted as the Committee arranges an interview with the entrepreneur. Companies that generated sufficient interest among the members will be asked to formally present their proposals in front of an AIF panel. In this case, a $350 fee is applicable. After providing feedback and suggestions, members privately discuss the potential of the two companies that presented. Due diligence shall proceed based on agreement. Although members invest individually, decisions are performed as a group. Necessary documents and plans are requested from successful start-ups accordingly.
Members are directly involved in the selection process, due diligence, and deal closures. They also contribute in the development of each portfolio company by providing expert advice and management mentoring based on their business experiences. As AIF members, they understand the risks involved in financing start-up companies as well as highly-illiquid investments. As a requirement, investors must close at least a single deal annually.

The Angel Investors Forum website is an excellent resource for young entrepreneurs who are seeking capital to support their start-up companies. The site presents an overview of AIF's history, mission, track record, and development in the last few years. The funding criteria are explained sufficiently as well as the investment process from the submission of proposal up to deal closing.
