The New Mexico Angels, Inc. is an angel investment and non-profit organization originally formulated by George Richmond as the New Mexico Private Investors, Inc. in 1999. Due to its unstoppable growth and progress, a need for a more rigid management was inevitable. Thus, in 2005, Dr. Jerry Mattingly stepped in as Executive Director and organized the entire investment group operations. Then in 2006, to suit the recent developments in the investment group, the members of the board conducted an election to decide on a change of name. And finally, the New Mexico Private Investors, Inc. was reborn to what is now known as the New Mexico Angels, Inc. The group is a member of the nationwide angel investment organization alliance, the Angel Capital Association. They also work hand-in-hand with the Kauffman Foundation in holding angel investment seminars for entrepreneurs and investors.
Currently, the New Mexico Angels, Inc. has over seventy six accredited investor members. Members came from a broad range of expertise and experience, making up a highly credible investment group. Although as a group, they co-invest with other angel investors, investment organizations or venture capital firms, each member is entitled to make his/her own individual decision on a particular investment opportunity. All members are required to pay an annual membership fee of $600, with an additional $300 fee for all scheduled events and activities. Those who are interested to become members can download the application form through the group's website or contact the executive director. Applications can be submitted through the executive director's electronic mail, together with a $100 check for application fee.
The New Mexico Angels, Inc. generally provides an investment capital worth $250,000 to $800,000 to emerging companies that have high growth potential. They preferably invest in companies that are based on technology or life science, although it is not a requirement. Companies should also be located or has maintaining operations in New Mexico. Those who are interested to apply for funding should submit the important requirements, these are a three-page executive summary, a one-page biography of the management team and a contact summary. A format for the contact summary is available on the investment group's website. All the necessary requirements for application should be submitted via electronic mail only. Applications will be reviewed by the screening committee for a selection of the topmost companies that fit with the interest of the group. These selected companies shall be invited for a fifteen-minute business presentation and fifteen-minute question and answer dry-run. A company that would pass the said stage of screening shall be invited to present their business plan at the group's dinner meeting. After the presentation, a due diligence process will be performed by the members in a period of three to six weeks. Then, the final negotiations of terms will be discussed to close the investment deal.
New Mexico Angels Inc. Website
The rebirth of the investment group to being the New Mexico Angels, Inc., has prompted them to come up with a more informational website. They have created an interesting logo as well, that goes with the new look of their whole organization. It can be compared to the logos of sport teams that illustrate a big pair of wings, with an emphasized word, "angel", in the middle.
The New Mexico Angels, Inc. website offers expounded and comprehensible information about all aspects of angel investment. Posted on the home page is the historical background of the group that accounts the significant transition they have recently undergone. There is also a log-in facility on the website that is exclusive for members. By keying-in a user name and password, members can review company profiles of prospective investment, as well as participate into chat forums and post important announcements.
