There was a time when great business opportunities and entrepreneurs in North Carolina were at a loss because there is no available means to facilitate their needs. So as not to waste the great potential of North Carolina for economic development, local investors together with the AdvantageWest Economic Development Group founded the Blue Ridge Angel Investment Network (BRAIN) on 2002. It is an organization of accredited investors who are experts in their respective fields or industries. These members work together in the achievement of significant financial return of investments from helping companies of high potential in attaining growth. In 2007, Blue Ridge Angel Investment Network shall become an independent corporation.

Blue Ridge Angel Investment Network invests on companies located or willing to relocate or plans for further expansion in North Carolina. It should also be of great potential and highly innovative. The group preferably invests on companies engaged in the following industries: advanced manufacturing; communications and information technology; food; life sciences and agricultural business; retirement-related; arts, crafts or design; health care; environment-related; recreation and tourism; and security. The amount of investment that the group is willing to provide ranges between $100,000 to $500,000.

Companies applying for funding are qualified following a criteria. A company should have a strong and experienced management team that is passionate and committed to achieve their goals. It should have wide range of market opportunity and a compelling market edge. They should use the investment funding to upgrade the value of the company. The company should have a significant potential for growth and should also be technologically innovative. The investment group and the investment company should be compatible in working towards their goals.

A company that is interested in applying for funding and meets the criteria should submit an application through an online registration system found on the Blue Ridge Angel Investment Network's website. The screening committee shall evaluate the application and shall decide to schedule for a screening meeting. After a successful screening, the company will be requested to prepare for business presentation to the entire investment group. Then, a due diligence process will follow. After which, the negotiations for terms and agreement shall be discussed and the final investment shall be made.

On the other hand, membership to the Blue Ridge Angel Investment is invitational. But for those who are interested to become an member investor can also accomplish a membership inquiry form on the group's website. Applicants should meet a criteria to qualify for membership. An applicant should be an accredited investor in accordance to the guidelines and regulations of the Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States. An accredited investor has an individual or joint net worth of at least $1 million, or an annual individual income of at least $200,000 or joint annual income of at least $300,000. An applicant should have relevant experience and expertise to be able to perform due diligence processes and mentoring and coaching companies, and should also have a wide network of contacts for future investment needs. All members are expected to participate in all events and activities of the investment group.

The Blue Ridge Angel Investment Network website projects credibility. The website has expounded information not just about the investment group but the whole angel investment business as well. It has provided explanations that further enlightens an individuals understanding about angel investing. It even provides a page that can be used as an assessment tool for companies to determine if angel investment is fit for them. The website also provides an extensive background and history of the angel group. It has also sited their advisory board members and staff in one of the pages. Current news, press releases and events are also posted to keep track of the group's activities.

The criteria for both investor and entrepreneur applications are all provided in the website. Applications for investor membership can be done online by filling out a form provided on a page. While, applications for entrepreneurs can be submitted through an online registration system provided by AngelSoft. The screening process and evaluation for investment funding are also enumerated for all applicants' information. Sponsorship for Blue Ridge Angel Investment Network is open and applications can also be submitted online. The list of current sponsors is also provided in a page. Various resources are also available, it includes websites and tips that can be used by prospective companies that seek funding or any business enthusiast. A contact page is also provided.
